How to remove Rear Suspension coil springs on bmw 325i?

Removal & Installation



2001-04 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Support the vehicle under the lower control arm.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
    Upper shock absorber flange bolt
    Lower shock absorber nut
    Shock absorber
    Wheel speed sensor wiring harness
    Lower control arm bolts

  4. Lower the floor jack and remove the coil spring and spring seats.

To install:


NOTE
Use new self-locking nuts for assembly.

  1. Place the coil spring and spring seats on the lower control arm and raise into position. Tighten the inboard bolt to 61 ft. lbs. and the outer bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber. Tighten the fasteners to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    Rear wheel


2005-06 Models
  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  2. Remove the rear wheel.
  3. Position a floor jack at the connecting point of the lower arm B and the knuckle.
  4. Remove the flange bolt (A) that connects the lower arm B and the knuckle.

  5. Lower the floor jack gradually.
  6. Remove the spring, upper spring seat, and lower spring seat.
  7. Remove the flange bolt that connects to the body, and remove the bump stop.

To install:

  1. Install the bump stop (A), and tighten the flange bolt (C) to the specified torque value.
  2. Install the upper spring seat (D) and spring (E). Align the bottom of the spring and the lower spring seat (F) with lower arm B as shown.

  3. Position a floor jack at the connecting point of the lower arm B and the knuckle.
  4. Slowly raise the jack until you can align the bolt hole with the holes in the lower arm B and the knuckle and install the flange bolt (A).
  5. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack until the vehicle just lifts off the safety stands.
  6. Tighten the flange bolt.
  7. Install the rear wheel.
  8. Check the rear wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.
