IDLE SPEED and MIXTURE ADJUSTMENTS on Honda odyssey?

Adjustments

Idle Speed and Mixture Adjustments

J35a1 And J35a4 Engines

The preferred method is to adjust the idle speed using the HDS procedure, if possible. If not, use the following procedure:

Leave the IAC valve connected.

Before setting the idle speed, check these items:

The MIL has not been reported on.
Ignition timing
Throttle cable adjustment
Spark plugs
Air cleaner
PCV system
No vacuum leaks

On Canadian models, press the parking brake pedal. Start the engine, then check that the headlights are off.

  1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector.
  2. Connect a tachometer.
  3. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  4. Check the idle speed with no load conditions: headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, radiator fan, and air conditioner off. The idle speed should be:
    1. J35A1 engines: 680-780 rpm (in Park or neutral)
    2. J35A4 engines: 700-720 rpm (in Park or neutral)

  5. Adjust the idle speed, if necessary, by turning the idle adjusting screw 1/ 4 turn clockwise or counterclockwise.
    WARNING
Do not turn the idle adjusting screw more than 1 / 4 turn without checking the idle speed.

  6. After turning the idle adjusting screw 1/4-turn, check the idle speed again. If it is out of spec, turn the idle adjusting screw 1/4-turn again.
  7. Allow the engine to idle for 1 minute with the heater fan switch at HI and air conditioner on, then check the idle speed. The idle speed should be:
    1. J35A1 engines: 680-780 rpm (in Park or neutral)
    2. J35A4 engines: 700-720 rpm (in Park or neutral)
      NOTE
Do not turn the idle adjusting screw when the air conditioner is on.

  8. Reconnect the EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector.

J35a6 And J35a7 Engines

On these engines, the idle speed is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No adjustment is necessary or possible, but you can inspect the idle speed with the following procedure.

NOTE
Before checking the idle speed, check these items:

The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) has not been reported on, and there are no DTCs.
Ignition timing
Spark plugs
Air cleaner
PCV system

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve connector.
  3. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.

  4. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  5. Check the idle speed without load conditions: headlights, blower fan, radiator fan, and air conditioner off. The idle speed should be 600-700 rpm (in Park or neutral).
  6. Let the engine idle for 1 minute with high electric load (A/C switch ON, temperature set to Max Cool, blower fan on High, rear window defogger ON, and headlights on high beam). The idle speed should be 650-750 rpm (in Park or neutral).
    NOTE
The idle learn procedure must be done so the PCM can learn the engine idle characteristics. Perform the idle learn procedure whenever you do any of these actions:

    Replace PCM
    Reset PCM
    Update PCM
Clean or replace the throttle body

  7. If the idle speed is not within specification, do the PCM idle learn procedure, as follows:
    NOTE
Erasing DTCs with the HDS does not require you to do the idle learn procedure.

    1. Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, rear window defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
    2. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
    3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and wait 2 seconds.
    4. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, or until the engine coolant temperature reaches 194 °F (90 °C).
    5. Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the throttle fully closed.
      NOTE
If the radiator fan comes on, do not include its running time in the 5 minutes.

  8. Reconnect the EVAP canister purge valve connector.
