Car bucks and loses Acceleration

Q: 2011 Dodge Caliber. The ETC light comes on, the car bucks and loses acceleration.

A: This seems to be a common problem in the Caliber.

Correctly repairing the problem will require diagnosing it. There are few possibilities that can cause such problem.When the ETC light comes on it is because the powertrain control module (PCM) has seen a problem somewhere that affects it's ability to control engine RPM and it sets a fault code.

Troubleshooting has to go step by step.The first step in diagnosing the problem is seeing what fault codes are stored from there, an accurate diagnosis will most likely require some testing to be done at the time it is acting up.

As per the problem described it seems that issue is bad MAP sensor, throttle body, a vacuum leak, wiring, the PCM itself, etc. It sounds like the engine is going into limp-in, which often happens when the PCM sees a problem on either the throttle body's TPS or drive motor circuits. I've seen a handful of throttle body failures on these cars, there's a good chance that is what your car needs.

Any professional garage shop should be able to diagnose and repair the problem. If it does need a throttle body then it will most likely need to come from a dealer,because  aftermarket will not carry a replacement for throttle body.

The problem in most cases is Flow of air gets thrown out every-time the engine is shut off.And this also makes noise and can be heard on driver side.


The Air is getting out of intake throttle valve.

This issue is related to faulty IAC also called as idle air control valve.Either is dirty or faulty.First remove the valve clean it and reinsert and check the problem.If its still there,then replace the IAC valve.

This is a faulty IACV(idle air control valve), and is a fairly common failure of this type. 

See the Idle Valve location shown in the diagram:-------

You can try removing it and cleaning it and see if it still makes the noise. If it does, then replace at that point.

There are 2 different 3.5L engines for the 2006 Pilot.


This one has an electronic throttle body in which the TP sensor and IAC valve are integrated into the throttle body.


Remove the throttle body and clean and reinstall. If noise continues, you have to replace the whole electronic throttle body assembly.

Idles at low rpm and will not rev up?

This problem is faced by many others too.
First check out this.
If you remove the air intake tube and turn the key on to the run position and get a helper to press the throttle pedal does the throttle plate open?

If it opens, then --
Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait 5 minutes then reconnect. Now with the air intake tube still off get some one to start the car and watch the throttle plate. If it starts it will run rough. If it starts then have them apply throttle and see if it will rev up. If it will not rev up then the electronic throttle body is faulty. If it revs up then reconnect the air tube and disconnect the battery once again to clear the computer of any faults you caused by running it with the air intake tube disconnected.

But if it revs up by this procedure then, throttle body is faulty.
