NTLDR is missing error ?

A missing NTLDR is a common start up error that can appear on the screen while booting a computer running a Windows operating system. This error may occur due to number of reasons.

NTLDR is short for Windows 'NT LoaDeR'. It's entirely involved in the loading of the operating system.

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk/hard drive that contains no operating system or CD-ROM drive. Firstly what you've got to to is press the Delete key multiple times as your computer boots up until it displays the BIOS screen. Then you will need to find the boot disk priority setting. Make sure this is set to your drive that has Windows on it (as priority 1) and not the CD-ROM drive/stiffy drive or empty hard drive. You can set the CD-ROM/DVD-Rom drive to priority 2 if you like.

Once you have checked that and have set it to your master/primary hard drive (the one that you've installed Windows onto), save and exit the BIOS and on reboot your system should boot into Windows normally.

If you only have one hard drive and the boot disk priority 1 is set to it and you still get this message, then it means that your NTLDR is either corrupted or missing. In the BIOS you will need to change boot disk priority 1 to your CD/DVD drive. Once this is done save and exit the BIOS.
As the PC reboots insert your Windows install disk and let it load.

Hit [R] when prompted if you need to repair system files and then [C] at the 'Welcome to Setup' screen to start the Recovery Console. This will let you copy NTLDR from the CD to C:\

If this fails then you will need to install a fresh copy of Windows on your system. All is not lost though as you can still save your data that is trapped on the NTLDR missing hard drive. If you are not quite seasoned with computers and electronics then this is the job for a PC technition. Simply take your PC down to your local Computer store and explain your situation (Don't forget to take your original Microsoft Windows with you). They will back up your data, re-install Windows and the put all your data back on for you.
