- Disengage the primary wiring connector from the distributor.
- Mark the position of the cap's No. 1 terminal on the distributor base.
- Unclip and remove the cap. Remove the adapter.
- Remove the rotor.
- Remove the TFI connector.
- Matchmark the distributor base and engine for installation reference.
- Remove the hold-down bolt and lift out the distributor.
Timing Not Disturbed
- Visually inspect the distributor. The O-ring should fit tightly onto the housing and be free of cuts. The drive gear should be free of nicks, cracks or excessive wear. The distributor shaft should rotate freely, without any binding.
- Lubricate the distributor gear teeth with a coating of engine assembly lubricant, such as Ford D9AZ-19579-D, or with fresh motor oil meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A.
- Align the locating boss and fully seat the distributor rotor on the distributor shaft, if removed.
- Rotate the distributor shaft so that the distributor rotor blade points toward the marked position on the distributor base adapter.
- Install the distributor assembly into the engine block with a slight side-to-side twist.
If the vane and vane switch assembly cannot be kept on the leading edge after installation, remove the distributor from the cylinder block by pulling upward enough for the distributor gear to disengage the distributor gear from the camshaft gear. Rotate the distributor rotor enough so that the gear will align on the next tooth of the camshaft gear.
- Install the distributor hold-down clamp and bolt; leave it snug.
- Position the adapter base in place, then install the attaching bolts.
- Attach the electrical connector to the distributor.
- Install the distributor cap. If the spark plug wires were removed from the distributor cap, install them in their proper position, as marked during the removal procedure.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Check the initial timing according to the proper procedure.
- Adjust the timing, as necessary, then tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 17-25 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm).
- Disconnect the No. 1 spark plug wire and remove the No. 1 spark plug.
- Place a finger over the spark plug hole and crank the engine slowly until compression is felt.
- Align the TDC mark on the crankshaft pulley with the pointer on the timing cover. This places the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke.
- Turn the distributor shaft until the rotor points to the No. 1 spark plug tower on the cap.
- Install the distributor assembly into the engine block with a slight side-to-side twist.

- Position the adapter base in place, then install the attaching bolts.

- Install the distributor cap. If the spark plug wires were removed from the distributor cap, install them in their proper position, as marked during the removal procedure.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Check the initial timing according to the proper procedure.
- Adjust the timing, as necessary, then tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 17-25 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm).
