Removal & Installation
2001-04 Models
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the air duct from the throttle body.
- Remove the wiring harness connector from the throttle body.
- Label and detach all vacuum hoses from the throttle body.
- Detach the accelerator cable.
- Detach and plug the coolant hoses from the throttle body.
- Remove the throttle body mounting fasteners.
- Remove the throttle body.
- Using a suitable plastic scraper, remove any gasket material from the throttle body and air intake plenum.
To install:
- Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following steps.
- Adjust the cruise control cable, as follows:
- Check that the actuator cable (A) moves smoothly with no binding or sticking.
- Start the engine, and turn the main switch ON. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load in Park or Neutral until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
- Measure the amount of movement of the output linkage (B) until the engine speed starts to increase. At first, the output linkage should be located at the fully closed position (C). The free play (D) should be 0.13-0.17 in. (3.25-4.25mm).
- If the free play is not within specification, move the cable to the point where the engine speed starts to increase, and tighten the locknut (A) and adjusting nut (B).
- Turn the adjusting nut (B) until it is 0.13-0.17 in. (3.25-4.25mm) away from the bracket (C).
- Pull the cable so that the adjusting nut (B) touches the bracket, and tighten the locknut (A).
- Adjust the throttle cable, as follows:
- Hold the throttle link (A) to the throttle lever (B).There should be no clearance.
- Check cable free play at the throttle linkage. Cable free play (A) should be 3 / 8 - 1 / 2 in. (10-12mm). If the free play is not within specifications, loosen the locknut (B), turn the adjusting nut (C) until the free play is as specified, then retighten the locknut.
- With the cable properly adjusted, check the throttle valve to be sure it opens fully when you push the accelerator pedal to the floor. Also check the throttle valve to be sure it returns to the idle position whenever you release the accelerator pedal.
- Hold the throttle link (A) to the throttle lever (B).There should be no clearance.
- Top off and bleed the cooling system as necessary.
CAUTION
Do not insert your fingers into the installed throttle body when you turn the ignition switch ON (II) or while the ignition switch is ON (II). If you do, you will seriously injure your fingers. If the throttle valve is activated.
NOTE
If you are replacing the throttle body, start at step 1. If you are removing the throttle body, start at step 4. This procedure requires the use of the HDS or equivalent scan tool.
- Connect the HDS while the engine is stopped.
- Select the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
- Do the TP LEARNING CHECK in the ETCS TEST.
- Disconnect the MAP sensor connector (A).
- Remove the intake air duct (B).
- Disconnect the throttle body connector (C).
- Disconnect and plug the water bypass hoses (D).
- Remove the throttle body (E).
- Using a suitable plastic scraper, remove any gasket material from the throttle body and air intake plenum.
To install:
- Install the parts in the reverse order of removal with a new gasket (F).NOTEThe idle learn procedure must be done so the PCM can learn the engine idle characteristics. Perform the idle learn procedure whenever you do any of these actions:Replace PCMReset PCMUpdate PCMClean or replace the throttle body
- Do the PCM idle learn procedure after the throttle body has been replaced, as follows:NOTEErasing DTCs with the HDS does not require you to do the idle learn procedure.
- Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, rear window defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and wait 2 seconds.
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, or until the engine coolant temperature reaches 194 °F (90 °C).
- Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the throttle fully closed.NOTEIf the radiator fan comes on, do not include its running time in the 5 minutes.
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant.
