The throttle position sensor (TPS) tells the computer how much throttle you are giving the engine. This information is used to control shifting. The TPS is like a volume control on a radio. You've probably experienced an old radio with a scratchy volume control. You move the knob an little bit and the sound goes from nothing to blasting you out of the house. When a TPS fails, it's the same thing. The computer thinks you don't have your foot on the pedal, then it looks like you've floored it. But you were just moving the pedal slowly.
The computer sends signals to the shift solenoids in the transmission to determine which gear to put the transmission in. But when a solenoid sticks, you get the wrong gear. Here is the way they should work:
Solenoid 1 on, solenoid 2 off = 1st gear
Solenoid 1 on, solenoid 2 on = 2nd gear
Solenoid 1 off, solenoid 2 on = 3rd gear
Solenoid 1 off, solenoid 2 off = 4th gear.
So if solenoid 1 was sticking, the truck wouldn't start in low gear, it would start in 4th then shift to third.
Those are the two most likely problems that could cause shifting problems on your truck.
