How to Replace a Rear Bumper Cover?

This guide requires the following supplies:
  • Basecoat
  • Clear Coat
  • Paint Suite
  • Primer
  • Soapy Water

Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.


Remove the cover from the vehicle. To do this use a door trim panel tool to loosen and remove all the clips that are holding the bumper cover to the vehicle. The vehicle may have screws holding the cover on that will need to be removed.

Take the new Rear Bumper Cover and ensuring it has been primed or sealed before paint is applied (Many new OEM and aftermarket covers come pre-primed). Manufacturers may recommend this primer not to be removed as it is designed for better paint adhesion.

Clean the entire rear bumper cover to remove any contaminations such as dirt, grease or dust.

Apply basecoat paint to the entire rear bumper cover.

Bake or dry the painted rear bumper cover.

Apply the clear coat application to the entire rear bumper cover.

Check for dirt in the paint.

Remove any dirt particles with a sharp razor blade.

Soak 1500 grit sandpaper in soapy water.

Add soapy water in a spray bottle and spray on painted surface.

Use a block with the sandpaper to help apply even pressure when sanding.

Sand the area in a circular motion until all the trash is removed.

Repeat the process with 2000 grit sandpaper.
Wipe the part down with an alcohol water mixture and re-inspect for dirt particles.
Use a polishing compound to remove any swirl marks left from the sanding.
Reinstall the new cover in reverse order that the old cover was removed. You may need to replace any clips or retainers that were broken during the removal of the cover.Road test vehicle and verify rear bumper repair.
