Removal & Installation
2001-04 Models
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
- Support the vehicle under the lower control arm.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
To install:
- Install or connect the following:Shock absorber. Tighten the fasteners to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).Rear wheel
- Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
- Remove the rear wheel.
- Position a floor jack at the connecting point of the lower control arm and knuckle (A). Raise the floor jack until the suspension begins to compress.
- Remove the flange bolt and nut from the body.
- Remove the self-locking nut from the knuckle.
- Compress the damper by hand, and remove it from the vehicle.
- Compress the damper assembly by hand, and check for smooth operation through a full stroke, both compression and extension. The damper should move smoothly and constantly when compression is released. If it does not, the gas is leaking and the damper should be replaced.
- Check for oil leaks, abnormal noises, or binding during these tests.
To install:
- Lower the rear suspension. Compress the damper (A) by hand, and move it into position. Loosely install the flange nut (B), bolt (C), and new self-locking nut (D).
- Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack until the vehicle just lifts off the safety stands.
- Tighten the flange bolt and self-locking nut on the bottom of the damper to the specified torque value.
- Install the rear wheel.
- Check the rear wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.
