How to Replace a Distributor Cap?

Open the hood and locate the vehicle's distributor cap.

Loosen the clips that hold the cap to the distributor housing. Remove the old distributor cap with the plug wires still attached and inspect under the cap for carbon build up.

Set the cap aside. Replace the old rotor with its new replacement piece.

Install the new distributor cap in the same position as the old part.

Starting with the wire closest to the #1 plug indicator on the cap, remove and reinstall the wires from the old cap to the new cap in a clockwise rotation. Avoid randomly disconnecting the plug wires and counting around the new cap to reconnect; this increases the potential to connect a wire to the wrong terminal.

Start the vehicle and make sure that it runs smoothly and that there are no misfires or backfiring.
