How to Replace a Freeze Plug?

Locate the round freeze plugs on the sides of the engine block.

Pressurize the cooling system using a radiator pressure tester.

Check for leaks at the freeze plugs.

Place a drain pan under the radiator. Open the drain valve or remove the lower radiator hose to drain the engine coolant.

Strike the inside edge of the leaking freeze plug with a hammer and punch. Remove the leaking freeze plug.

Clean the engine block hole with emery cloth.

Using a large socket (that fits snugly into the plug), hammer in the new freeze plug evenly.

Close the drain valve or reconnect the lower radiator hose and fill the radiator with coolant.

Pressurize the cooling system and check for leaks.
