How to Replace Mud Flaps (Mud Guards)

Locate the mud guards/mud flaps behind the wheels.

Using the appropriate tool, remove the bolts that secure the mud guard/mud flaps to the body panel.

Replace the damaged mud guard/mud flaps with its new replacement part.

Take the new mud guard/mud flaps and make sure it is primed or sealed before paint is applied (Many new OEM and aftermarket covers come pre-primed). Some manufacturers may recommend this primer not be removed as it is designed for better paint adhesion.

Clean the entire mud guard/mud flaps to remove any contaminations such as dirt, grease or dust.

Apply the basecoat paint to the entire mud guard/mud flap.

Bake or dry the painted mud guard/mud flap.

Apply the clear coat application to the entire mud guard/mud flap.

Check for dirt in the paint.

Remove large dirt particles with a sharp razor blade.

Soak 1500 grit sandpaper in soapy water.

Add soapy water in a spray bottle and spray on painted surface.

Use a block with the sandpaper and apply even pressure when sanding.

Sand the area in a circular motion until all the dirt is removed.

Repeat the process with 2000 grit sandpaper that has been soaked in soapy water.

Wipe the part down with an alcohol water mixture and re-inspect for dirt particles.

Use a polishing compound to remove swirl marks left from sanding.

After the paint is applied and dried you can install and mount the new mud guard/mud flap.

Road test vehicle and verify mud guard/mud flap repair.
