How to Replace a Rear Main Seal?

Secure the vehicle on a level surface, making sure the vehicle will not roll or lean too much when jacked up.

Use a jack to lift up the front of the vehicle. Every vehicle comes from the factory with a jack. To locate and properly use this jack see the owner's manual. The owner's manual will inform you what proper jacking locations should be used.

Open the hood and locate the engine block.

Disconnect the battery cables from the battery posts.

Disconnect the transmission throttle linkages.

Disconnect all the wiring connectors such as starter, backup switches and sensors, and solenoids.

Disconnect the starter wiring at the starter.

Remove the starter mounting bolts and remove the starter.

Remove the transmission pan or drain the transmission fluid.

Disconnect any exhaust pipes and cross tubes. The exhaust pipe will need to be removed at the exhaust manifold.

Disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission.

Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission.

Remove the driveshaft by unbolting the u-joints.

Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines if equipped.

Position a transmission jack under the transmission.

Remove the transmission mount that is bolted to the transmission cross member.

Lift the transmission up to release pressure on the mount.

Unbolt the transmission cross member bolts.

Remove the cross member.

Lower the transmission until you can use the chain to secure the transmission to the transmission jack.

Remove the engine flywheel cover to gain access to the transmission to engine bolts.

Remove any shields or covers from the flywheel inspection cover to gain access to the torque converter bolts.

Turn the crankshaft as needed until all the torque converter bolts are removed.

Remove the transmission to engine mounting bolts.

Pull the transmission backwards until it clears the engine.

Once the transmission is removed you will need to set it aside.

Remove the flywheel or flex plate using a suitable flywheel holding tool.

Inspect the crankshaft seal surface for any damage. If any damage is evident the crankshaft will need to be serviced.

Install the new rear main seal.

Re-install the transmission in the reverse order of removal.

Test drive to check for leaks to verify repair.
