How to Replace a Brake Disc (Rotor)

Park your vehicle on a solid level surface. Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.

Remove the front wheel hub caps if applicable. Using a tire iron, break loose the front wheel lug nuts but do not remove.

Using a floor jack, lift up the front of your vehicle.

Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. The pinch welds or the frame rails are the two best locations. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.

1. Remove the front wheel lug nuts. Remove the front wheels and set them aside.
2. Locate the brake caliper. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts or pins.
3. Swivel the caliper up and away from the brake disc. Secure the caliper to the coil spring with a bungee cord. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose. Do not disconnect the brake hose
4. Follow the steps below to remove a brake disc and hub assembly:
5. • Remove the dust cap by using channel lock pliers to work it back and forth
6. • Remove the cotter pin and then the retaining ring/lock
7. • Remove the wheel bearing adjusting nut and washer
8. • Slide the disc assembly off the spindle
9. • Remove the outer wheel bearing
10. • Remove the inner wheel bearing and grease seal
11. Coat the inside of the new disc hub with grease. Clean the disc surface with brake clean. Pack the inner wheel bearing with grease and install it into the inner side of the brake disc hub. Install a new grease seal.
12. Slide your new brake disc assembly onto the spindle. Repack the outer wheel bearing with grease and install it into the disc hub.
13. Install the retaining washer and nut.
14. To adjust the wheel bearing free play, spin the hub and tighten the nut to the manufacturer's specifications.
15. Install the nut retainer.
16. Install a new cotter pin.
17. Install the wheel bearing dust cap.
18. Slide the brake caliper over the new brake disc. Re-install the caliper mounting bolts.
19. Tighten the caliper bolts or pins. Re install any rubber boots if applicable.

Repeat steps 1 through 19 for the other side.

Install the front wheels. Snug down the wheel lug nuts.

Remove jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Torque the wheel lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications in a star pattern.

Verify that you have a solid brake pedal. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
