How to remove PIN from Garmin Nuvi satnav

Nearly every day there's a question asked by Garmin Nuvi satnav owners as to how to change or remove their PIN which they have forgotten. Ideally you should use a PIN that you will never forget or save it somewhere you can get access to it again if you do forget it. However we all make mistakes and so a lot of users end up on this website looking for a solution.

1.
When you set your PIN you get an option to set a Security Location. When you set this your satnav must have satellite reception. When you forget your PIN you go to your Security Location and the satnav will start up without you having to enter the PIN, provided you have a satellite connection. As you cannot see the signal strength bar until you get past the PIN entry screen you won't know if it has accessed satellites or not so you need to give it a while. Also as GPS is not one hundred percent accurate you may need to move around five to ten metres in a gradually widening circle from the security location. This gives you a better chance of getting the exact spot. If all is well your satnav should open but the PIN is still set. To remove the PIN when you get your satnav started
  • Press TOOLS
  • Then press SETTINGS (or LOCALE on some models which don't have the SETTINGS icon)
  • Press SECURITY
  • Press GARMIN LOCK ON
  • Press OFF
  • Press OK
Your PIN is now removed. If you want to set a new PIN
  • Press TOOLS
  • Then press SETTINGS (or LOCALE on models that don't have a settings icon)
  • Press SECURITY
  • Press GARMIN LOCK OFF
  • Press ON
  • Enter your new PIN
  • Press OK
You then get the option to set a new security location. Again be sure you have a satellite connection.

2. If you have forgotten your PIN but either have not set a security location or forget where it is the only option is to return it to Garmin to get it removed. You must send proof of ownership along with the satnav if you're returning it as the PIN is there to protect satnav owners from thieves. If you need to return the satnav to Garmin you can get their contact details athttp://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/supportcontact
