How to troubleshoot odometer ?

Odometer is the faithful mile counter on your dashboard that keeps you informed about the distance your car has covered.There is no way you can reset the mileage shown by the odometer, through this repair procedure or any other.

The planetary gear which is most common reason for odometer not working.-----
Odometer repair is very delicate work and you need to be very careful while removing all of its connected parts and reassembling then together.
Before you begin to remove the odometer, disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery. First part is the removal of the speedometer gauge. Take hold of the flat head screwdriver and using it remove the gasket surrounding the circumference of the speedometer gauge.
Gently remove the entire speedometer gauge assembly out of the dashboard. You need to be slow in doing this, taking care of not disconnecting the wires connected to the gauge from behind. Look at the back side of the gauge and observe the wire connection made to it. Take a snapshot if you want before you go ahead and remove the wire connections. That way you will remember how to put them back.
The odometer stops working because the gear within the odometer has worn out. You'll need no special tools to do this, but you must know what to watch out for or you could permanently damage the speedometer that is housed in the same gauge as the odometer.

  • Disconnect the negative cable from your car's battery.

  • Using a flat head screwdriver, gently pry the gasket around the edge of the face of your speedometer gauge away from the dash and remove the gasket. Pull the entire speedometer gauge out of the dash; be careful not to disconnect the connecting electrical wires when doing this. Once you can reach behind the gauge, note how the wire connects to it and then disconnect it by grasping it near the connection and pulling it free.

  • Lay the gauge face down on your work surface and remove the screws from the back of the case with a regular-size Phillips head screwdriver. Once the screws are removed, lift the gauge out of its casing and turn it face up on your work surface.

  • Grasp the post that is used to reset the trip odometer and gently pull it from the gauge. Do this slowly; if you feel any resistance as you are pulling, place a finger under the dial of the gauge and press upward where the post passes through and connects into the motor casing. The motor casing will look like a small black plastic box attached to the reverse side of the dial, and will be separate from the metal housing of the gauge that contains the speedometer.

  • Remove the speedometer needle by pinching the round base of the needle and turning the needle clockwise until it stops, then pull up slowly and gently while rocking the needle back and forth slightly. It is very easy to bend the needle and it is essential that you take your time doing this step and do not force the needle off.

  • Unscrew and remove the two screws in the face of the gauge using one of the mini Phillips head screwdrivers from your computer repair kit. Once the screws are removed, pull the motor casing for the odometer out from the dial.

  • Pull the gear pod off the top of the motor casing. The gear pod is attached to the "lid" of the casing and will come off as such.

  • Pry the odometer planetary gear from the gear pod using a mini flat head screwdriver from your computer repair kit. Press your replacement gear into position and reassemble the gauge by reversing the steps you took to remove it.

  • The speedometer not working?

    The instrument which informs you and let you know how fast your car is moving is speedometer.
    There are generally two types of speedometers.

    FIRST TYPE:---
    In one type of car the speedometer head is connected to the output shaft of the transmission by means of flexible speedo cable. Which is attached to the pinion gear in the transmission.

    SECOND TYPE:---
    In other type of cars the speedometer and odometer are driven by flexible cable that is attached to one of the cars wheel, usually the left hand front wheel, is where this cable is connected.

    The noise from speedometer very much indicates towards the faulty speedometer or end of speedometer life is very near and it needs inspection.-------
    Inspecting the speedo meter cable helps, many a times this cable gets loose or shorted from its connection and causes the problem.

    Now a days digital speedometers are introduced.
    In these type of speedometers, there is a sensor on the car's rotating shaft. Also, the rotating shaft has a magnet joined to it and is placed besides a magnetic sensor. A tiny electrical current, in form of a pulse, is produced whenever the rotating shaft passes the sensor. This pulse rate is calculated by a little computer and sent to the dial where you can see the car's speed.

    Speedometer Cable Replacement
    Take out the engine cover and doghouse to remove the speedometer cable from your car. Take out the bolt from under the dashboard, so that you can easily access the old speedometer cable. Also remove the nut on the rotating shaft and pull the speedometer cable out through the passage. Remove the clamps present on the transmission and engine compartment. Once you have removed the old speedometer cable from your car, you need to replace it with a new one.

    Speed Sensor Replacement for Front Wheel Drive Vehicles
    You will find the speed sensor behind the engine above the trans-axle. Take out the connecting hose, air cleaner and electrical connector from above the sensor. With help of a 10 mm socket, take out bolts keeping the sensor in place. Simply twist the sensor to take it out. Fix the new sensor in place and tighten bolts around it. Attach back the hose, air cleaner and the electrical connector on to the sensor.
    Speed Sensor Replacement for Rear Wheel Drive Vehicles
    You will find the speed sensor on the driver's side behind the transmission. Raise the vehicle up from the driver's side and put a jack stand below to hold it there. Disconnect electrical connectors present on the sensor and take out bolts keeping the sensor in place, using a socket. Take out the sensor carefully and fix a new one in its place. Attach the electrical connector to it and tighten it.

    On old style speedo, the speedometer cable fits into the metal funnel of the housing, so feed the cable into the housing slowly to avoid cable kinking or getting damaged.-------

    In some digital speedometer cases replacing the speed sensor does no helps, in that case the speedo cable to the module has to be checked.------------

    Here's how the system works:

    If you don't have ABS the vehicle
    speed sensorsends electrical pulses generated by a tone ring directly to the body control module ( BCM), when then measures how fast it receives these pulses and translates this into a vehicle speed reading and sends it to the PCM (Engine computer). The PCM then tells the speedometer what speed to display.


    If you DO have ABS, the ABS Module measures the vehicle speed, then sends it to the Body
    control module, which then sends it to the PCM, which then tells the speedometer what to read.

    If you had a communication loss between the modules, the speedometer is programmed to read the last received speed for six seconds, and then if it still isn't being told what to do, should drop to ZERO.

    If you have ABS and it was getting a vehicle speed deading of 18MPH, but the wheel speed sensors were reading a higher speed, it would turn on the ABS light, so if you have ABS I think most likely the Speedometer assembly itself it bad. (As long as the ABS light isn't staying on).

    If you don't have ABS, then it's still quit possible you have a bad Speedomoter assembly, but there's also the possibility of the Body Control Module doing goofy and glitchy stuff, but it's not very likely at all. I would smack above the speedometer on top of the dashboard while you are driving.. if it comes to life and starts working you know that's the case.

    It is extremely important, as without a functioning speedometer you have no true way of determining your current speed (at least until a police officer pulls you over and shows you the radar reading). Because of this, if you believe the speedometer in your vehicle is not displaying an accurate speed you need to troubleshoot the device in order to correct any problems that may be occurring.

    How to test starter solenoid?

    As you turn the ignition key, car's starter motor is switched on by power delivered by car battery, via solenoid. The starter solenoid is a relay that closes metal contacts with the starter motor, when it receives a current from car battery and ignition switch. As a result of current being delivered, the motor starts working. This makes a retractable rotating gear to engage with the flywheel and turn it to crank the engine . The starter solenoid thus provides power to drive starter motor.

    So when your car doesn't start, it may be due to the malfunctioning of several parts that come into play ranging from the car battery to the retractable gear. There are two main types of starter solenoids. One type only acts as a switch which closes the circuit between battery and motor. The other type may act as a switch, as well as move the plunger that engages the gear with the flywheel. Insufficient power delivered from the car battery can be the reason for starter solenoid not being able to switch on the motor. Let us take a look at how to troubleshoot a starter solenoid

    Arm yourself with a voltmeter and check whether the battery output voltage is around 12 V. If it is, then you can proceed with the rest of starter solenoid testing procedure. To test the starter solenoid connect a jumper cable to the battery side of the solenoid. The solenoid has two large posts and two small posts. A single large post is located on either side of the solenoid. Attach the alligator clip of the jumper cable to the large post on the battery side of the solenoid. Touch the opposite end of the jumper cable to the large post on the other side of the solenoid. If the starter turns the engine normally, the problem likely lies with an ignition override switch, such as a clutch start switch or a neutral safety switch. If the starter produces a buzzing sound, the starter is likely defective. If there is no response at all, the solenoid is defective and must be replaced.
    Disconnect the wire that runs from ignition switch to solenoid. In order to test the starter solenoid.
    To jump you can use insulated pliers or a screwdriver to short the big post on the starter solenoid, with the ignition switch terminal on the same device. This will directly transfer power to solenoid without the ignition switch current. Now ask somebody to turn on the ignition.
    If your engine cranks with the ignition switch terminal shorted in this way, then your solenoid is in good working condition and the problem is elsewhere. Otherwise, if the engine doesn't crank, you'll have to replace the starter solenoid.

    How to test cars starter?

    Starter motor problems usually are indicated by the following symptom: Turn the key to the START position and you hear a loud click, or sometimes you hear nothing. The headlights are bright and don't dim when you turn the key to START, and everything else electrical seems to work fine. It could be a bad starter neutral switch or a bad key switch but about 99% of the time it's a bad starter or starter solenoid. Here is the procedure for checking out a starter motor and its solenoid. To test the starter try this procedure.

    --------- Measure the voltage at the starter solenoid. Place the red probe on the positive battery terminal on the starter solenoid and place the negative probe on chassis ground. Have someone turn the key switch to "START" while you measure the voltage. The voltage should be approximately 12.6 volts. If the voltage is correct, there is a problem with the starter. Remove the negative battery post and check the connections on the starter. But if voltage is very low and less then 12 volts, this indicates its faulty solenoid. If you follow the wire from starter solenoid, it will reach the starter relay. That starter relay is a 12 volt part. If there is no voltage to starter or solenoid then its faulty starter relay. ---------------- If starter checked out ok, then its many other possibilities too causing this problem. Touch the end of the red jump lead onto the large terminal of the starter. The pinion should rotate strongly.-------You can diagnose the starter by measuring the current draw. You can purchase a small "clamp on" ammeter that you simply lay on the cable to the starter .In this case you don’t have to disconnect anything. Crank it and watch the little needle tell you what the current is. If there is a high current draw then you know that the starter is at fault. There is one main reason for a starter to fail when it is hot - worn bearings, especially in the tail shaft. The heat generated in the starter by the engine and the exhaust pipes (sometimes) causes the armature to expand. If the bearings are worn then the armature drags (actually contacts) on the stator causing a short circuit and a high friction drag. Sometimes just replacing the bearings can fix the problem.

    Hard drive troubleshooting?

    As of 2010, virtually all of the world's Hard Disk Drives are manufactured by just five large companies: Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, Samsung, and Toshiba.

    Now to the Fun Stuff

    Whether we are building our own computer, upgrading our existing PC or just adding an extra hard drive to increase storage, we usually rely entirely on Windows for maintenance and care of this new or old hard drive. That's not always as efficient or good as it sounds. If you have ever used the Windows defragment software to defrag your hard drive, you know just how tedious and long this process is. The Defrag program itself is not very intuitive and has very few adjustable parameters.

    Defragmenting is good!

    It is usually a good idea to download a non Windows defragmenter with more user friendly options such as quick defrag, data map (for seeing what chunks of data are being moved) or selectable defragment options which allow you to choose what to defragment. What you select as your program of choice is entirely up to you. Be advised, however. Microsoft has been
    steadily working you away from having any control over how you
    defragment your drive.

    With each upgrade and revision of Windows, you see less and less of what is actually going on with your hard drive, which places all of your trust on a company most people know very little about.

    If you are like me, your hardware is important to you, and you want to know more, not less about what may be going wrong with your equipment. Why defrag doesn't automatically run when your hard drive slows down due to severe fragmentation is a mystery I have never solved.
    Your antivirus will stop a program from destroying data, your Desktop has an automatic cleanup wizard, and even your Email asks if you want to compact messages to save space. So why does Windows allow your hard drive to fragment itself to such a state that data loss can occur simply
    because Windows can no longer remember where your files are stored?

    Well, those problems won't be solved by wishful thinking, we have to take control and do this ourselves. Some good defragment programs will have a scheduler, and you will want to set this up to run at a time when you will not be busy on your PC. Remember to disable screensavers as this will slow down your defrag speed. Some antiviruses can do this as well, especially if they just happen to update you while the defragmenter is running. Essentially Any program that writes data to your hard drive while you are trying to defrag it will slow down your completion time, so turn it off.

    Scandisk or Checkdisk

    CHKDSK (short for Checkdisk) is a command on computers running DOS, OS/2 and Microsoft Windows operating systems that displays the file system integrity status of hard disks and floppy disk and can fix logical file system errors. It is similar to the fsck command in Unix.
    On computers running NT-based versions of Windows, CHKDSK can also check the disk surface for physical errors or bad sectors, (an area of the disk that may have had a momentary head
    crash) a task previously done by SCANDISK (for older versions of Windows such as, 95,98,ME).

    This version of CHKDSK can also handle some physical errors and recover data that is still readable.

    When do you run scandisk?

    1. When data loss has occurred, typically when Windows cannot find a file.
    2. When your computer can actually find the file, but takes forever getting there.
    3. When your PC is using a hibernation file as well as system restore and cant restore properly.
    4. When your PC continually starts up in safe mode.
    5. When you get an error stating that Windows must shut down to prevent data loss.
    6. After a virus is detected and cleaned.

    Windows does not perform this check automatically or when an error occurs. In some instances such as several hard starts or crashes, Windows will offer to run the scandisk or start itself, but by then it is usually too late to actually do any good. While it may make you feel better that the Disk check program has started on it's own, and it appears that Windows is trying to protect you from data loss, the actual fact is that this is a last ditch effort for Windows to recover itself, not your data, but it's own startup files. If your data gets saved in the process, so much the better.

    Alternately you can run Scandisk-Checkdisk in the Shell mode or dos type box.
    CHKDSK can be run from the Windows Shell, the Windows Command Prompt or the Windows Recovery Console. One option for CHKDSK is the use of the Command-line/R parameter, which allows the program to repair damage it finds on the hard drive.
    Conducting a CHKDSK can take some time, especially if using the /R parameter, and the results are often not visible, for various reasons. The results of a CHKDSK conducted on restart using Windows 2000 or later operating systems are written to the Application Log, with a "Source"
    name of Wininit or Winlogon and can be viewed with the Event Viewer.

    This method is usually your last line of defense and will only be offered in extreme situations where a boot failure has occurred.

    A word on SFC (System File Checker)

    Have you ever had a program fail to execute, then follow with a DLL error of some type? This is a handy way to restore that corrupt, missing or virus altered DLL, and it can be started in Windows.
    By default, Windows File Protection is always enabled and allows Windows digitally signed files to replace existing files safely. Currently, signed files are distributed through:

    # Windows Service Packs
    # Hotfix distributions
    # Operating system upgrades
    # Windows Update
    # Windows Device Manager

    If you introduce a file replacement in any other way, Windows File protection will overwrite your file! An important part of Windows File Protection is the command line utility:

    System File Checker (sfc.exe)

    Use this utility when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file. To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow.
