How to Replace a Heater Core?

Park your vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool down before proceeding.

If applicable, verify that you have the radio security code before you disconnect the battery.

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Wrap the cable end in a shop towel, and place it away from the battery post.

Loosen the radiator cap, and place a drain pan under the radiator drain plug or petcock. Remove the plug or open the petcock to drain the coolant.

Remove the glove box door or any related parts that are in front of the heater core.

Carefully remove any wiring connected to your heater core.

Mark the heater core hoses for installation reference. Remove the heater core hoses.

Remove the heater core from under the dash. Some cars will have the heater core fairly accessible under the glove box after it is removed. Other vehicles may require removing the instrument panel from the console of the dashboard and also the air compressor unit.

Install the new heater core and reconnect the heater core hoses. Carefully reconnect any wiring and install the related parts.

Re-install and tighten the radiator drain plug or petcock. Refill the radiator and the overflow reservoir with coolant.

Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the engine. With the radiator cap off, allow the engine to run for 10 to 15 minutes. Add coolant to your radiator if the level drops.

Re-install the radiator cap and check the cooling system for leaks.

Turn on the heater and verify a change in temperature.
