How to replace water pump on 1988 Nissan Pulsar ?

I WANT TO REPLACE WATER PUMP ON MY NISSAN PULSAR?

Yes you can replace, but i will say its not easy job and its time consuming job.
Also timing belt cover needs to be removed.---------

CAUTION When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
E-Series Engines

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the power steering drive belt and the power steering pump.

When removing the power steering pump, do not disconnect the pressure hoses or drain the system.

  1. Remove the water pump/alternator drive belt.
  2. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and move it aside.
  3. Remove the water pump pulley, then the water pump and the gasket.


To install:

  1. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2. Install the water pump on the engine, with a new gasket. Torque the water pump bolts evenly to 78-120 inch lbs. (9-13 Nm).
  3. Install the water pump pulley, alternator and the power steering pump.
  4. Adjust the drive belts and refill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for leaks.


CA16DE and CA18DE Engines

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Loosen the bolts retaining the fan shroud to the radiator and remove the shroud.
  4. Loosen the belt, then remove the fan and pulley from the water pump hub.
  5. Remove the bolts retaining the pump and remove the pump together with the gasket from the front cover.


To install:

  1. Remove all traces of gasket material and install the pump in the reverse order. Use a new gasket and sealer. Tighten the bolts uniformly and torque to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-18 Nm).
  2. Install the pulley and fan onto the water pump hub.
  3. Install and adjust the drive belt and radiator shroud.
  4. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.
  5. Refill the cooling system and start the engine and check for leaks.

The water pump cannot be disassembled and must be replaced as a unit. Be careful not to get coolant on the timing belt

CD17 (Diesel) Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the alternator and air conditioning compressor drive belts, if equipped.
  3. Remove the front crankshaft pulley after first setting the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke.
  4. Remove the front engine covers.
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the water pump. Take note of the location and length of each bolt, as there are three different lengths.


To install:

  1. Clean all gasket surfaces before reassembly. Install new gaskets, and install the pump. Torque the bolts, going around in several stages to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
  2. Refer to Timing Belt Removal and Installation procedure for the CD17 engine later in this section, and install the timing belt and timing belt covers. Make sure to replace the timing belt if the pump has been leaking, as antifreeze will destroy timing belts.
  3. The remaining steps of installation are the reverse of removal. Make sure there is adequate clearance between the hose clamp and the timing cover to avoid deforming the cover.

The water pump cannot be disassembled and must be replaced as a unit. Inspect the timing belt for wear or damage and replace if necessary.

GA16i Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Drain the coolant from the radiator and cylinder block.

  1. Remove all the drive belts.
  2. Unbolt the water pump pulley and the water pump attaching bolts.
  3. Separate the water pump with the gasket, if installed, from the cylinder block.
  4. Remove all gasket material or sealant from the water pump mating surfaces. All sealant must be removed from the groove in the water pump surface also.


To install:

  1. Apply a continuous bead of high temperature liquid gasket to the water pump housing mating surface. The housing must be attached to the cylinder block within 5 minutes after the sealant is applied. After the pump housing is bolted to the block, wait at least 30 minutes for the sealant to cure before starting the engine.
  2. Position the water pump (and gasket) onto the block and install the attaching bolts. Torque the small retaining bolts to about 60 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and large retaining bolts 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm).
  3. Install the water pump pulley.
  4. Install the drive belts and adjust the tension.
  5. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  6. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.


GA16DE Engine

  1. Remove the cylinder head front mounting bracket.
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  3. Remove the engine drive belts from the A/C compressor, power steering pump and alternator.
  4. Remove the belt pulley from the water pump.
  5. Disconnect electrical connectors and coolant hoses from the thermostat housing.
  6. Unbolt and remove the water pump and thermostat housing from the engine.

Remove the thermostat housing with water pump assembly.

  1. Remove the bolts that secure the thermostat housing to the water pump.
  2. Remove all traces of gasket material from sealing surfaces.


To install:

  1. Apply a continuous bead of liquid sealer to the sealing surface of the thermostat housing. The sealant should be 0.079-0.118 in. (2-3mm) diameter.
  2. Install the thermostat housing on the water pump and tighten mounting bolts to 56-73 inch lbs. (7-8 Nm).
  3. Apply a continuous bead of liquid sealer to the sealing surface of the water pump. The sealant should be 0.079-0.118 in. (2-3mm) diameter.
  4. Install the water pump on the engine and tighten mounting bolts to 56-73 inch lbs. (7-8 Nm).
  5. Install the pulley on the water pump and tighten the mounting bolts to 56-73 inch lbs. (7-8 Nm).
  6. Connect electrical connectors and coolant hoses to the thermostat housing.
  7. Install and adjust the alternator, power steering and A/C compressor drive belts.
  8. Refill the cooling system and connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Start the engine, bleed the cooling system, warm the engine to full operating temperature, and check for leaks.
  10. If necessary, refill the cooling system when the engine has cooled.


SR20DE Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the radiator coolant.

  1. Remove the cylinder block drain plug located at the left front of the engine and drain coolant.
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  3. Remove the power steering pump, alternator and A/C compressor drive belts (if equipped).
  4. Remove the water pump pulley.
  5. Note positioning of power steering pump adjusting bracket and remove the power steering pump adjusting bracket from the water pump. If necessary, remove the power steering pump for access to bracket.

When removing the power steering pump, it is not necessary to disconnect the pressure hoses or drain the system. Position or tie the pump aside.

  1. Support the engine and remove the front engine mount.
  2. Remove the mounting bolts from the water pump and remove the water pump.
  3. Remove all traces of liquid gasket material from sealing surfaces.


To install:

  1. Apply a continuous bead of liquid sealer to the mating surface of the water pump. Sealer should be 0.079-0.118 in. (2-3mm) wide.
  2. Install the water pump assembly and tighten mounting bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).

Be sure to properly position the adjusting bracket that was noted during removal.

  1. Install the front engine mount.
  2. Install the power steering pump adjusting bracket and install the power steering pump if removed.
  3. Install the water pump pulley and tighten mounting bolts to 55-73 inch lbs. (6-8 Nm).
  4. Install and adjust the power steering pump, alternator and A/C compressor drive belts (if equipped).
  5. Install the cylinder block drain plug located at the left front of the engine and tighten drain plug to 70-104 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  6. Refill the cooling system and connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Start the engine, bleed the cooling system, and check for leaks.

Nissan Sentra/Pulsar/NX 1982-1996

Timing Cover and Seal

  • REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

To remove front cover the crankshaft damper or pulley must be removed, this usually requires a puller. Before proceeding review the procedures for crankshaft damper and make sure there is enough clearance to install the puller. If there is not enough clearance for the puller, you need to remove the engine. Review engine removal steps before proceeding as necessary.

E-Series Engines

The front crankshaft oil seal can only be replaced when the crankshaft sprocket is removed.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Drain the cooling.

  1. Remove the radiator together with the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  2. Loosen the air conditioning belt and remove.
  3. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt, and remove the alternator belt. Unbolt the alternator mounting bracket and remove the alternator.
  4. Remove the power steering belt (if equipped) by loosening the steering pump adjusting bolt.
  5. Remove the water pump pulley.
  6. Remove crankshaft pulley. Support the engine and remove the right side engine mount bracket.
  7. Loosen and remove the 8 Torx® head bolts securing the timing covers and remove the upper and lower covers.


To install:

  1. Install the timing belt covers and torque the belt cover bolts to 36-48 inch lbs. (4-5.5 Nm) and reconnect the engine mounting bracket.
  2. Install the crankshaft pulley in place and tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to the specified torque:

    1982 E15-108-145 ft. lbs. (147-197 Nm) 1983-88 E15 and E16-83-108 ft. lbs. (113-147 Nm)
  3. Install the water pump pulley.
  4. Install the alternator and all the drive belts.
  5. Install the radiator and all cooling hoses. Refill the cooling system.
  6. Connect the battery cable and start engine.


CD17 (Diesel) Engine

This procedure includes oil seal removal and installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.

  1. Remove the radiator together with the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  2. Remove the fan, fan coupling and fan pulley. Using a gear puller, remove the crankshaft damper pulley.
  3. Remove the power steering pump, bracket and idler pulley.
  4. Support the engine securely with a jack and block of wood under the oil pan. Then, unbolt the mount that sits in front of the timing belt cover. Unbolt and remove the bracket that interferes with timing belt cover removal.
  5. Remove the front belt cover. Remove the valve timing belt (see the Timing Belt and Camshaft removal procedure in this section).
  6. Remove the front oil seal by taping the end of a thin prybar or old prybar, and carefully pry the old seal out from around the end of the crankshaft. Do not scratch the shaft with the prybar.


To install:

  1. Coat a new seal with clean engine oil. Slide it onto the crankshaft end and back into place in the front of the block. Use a small drift to evenly drive the seal back until it seats in position.
  2. Follow the Timing Belt and Camshaft removal and installation procedure and install the timing belt.
  3. Install front timing belt cover and install all attaching bolts.
  4. Install the engine mounting bracket. Reconnect the engine mount. Remove the jack and block of wood from under the oil pan.
  5. Install the power steering pump .
  6. Install the crankshaft damper pulley.Install the fan, fan coupling and fan pulley.
  7. Install the radiator and hoses. Refill the cooling system. Connect the battery.


CA16DE and CA18DE Engines

For removal and installation of the timing belt upper and lower covers, refer to the timing belt procedures later in this section.

GA16i Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.

  1. Remove the oil pan as outlined in this section.
  2. Remove all drive belts and power steering pump bracket, if so equipped.
  3. Remove the air cleaner.
  4. Install an engine lifting device to the front side of the engine. Remove the engine mounting bracket.
  5. Remove the water pump as outlined in this section.
  6. Remove the timing chain tensioner from the front cover.
  7. Remove the rocker arm cover and all spark plugs.
  8. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke and remove the crankshaft pulley.
  9. Remove the front cover.


To install:

  1. Apply RTV sealer to the front cover and install within 5 minutes. Torque the bolts to 60-84 inch lbs. (7-10 Nm).

When using RTV sealant instead of gaskets, make sure the surface you are working on is very clean before applying the sealant, then apply an even bead. Allow the RTV to dry slightly to form a thin skin. The component MUST be tightened before the RTV dries completely. The bolt torque should be checked again after RTV has completely dried.

  1. Install the crankshaft pulley and torque the bolt to 69-76 ft. lbs. (94-103 Nm).
  2. Install the rocker arm cover and all spark plugs.
  3. Install the timing chain tensioner to the front cover.
  4. Install the water pump as outlined in this section.
  5. Install the engine mounting bracket.
  6. Install the air cleaner.
  7. Install all drive belts and power steering pump bracket, if so equipped.
  8. Install the oil pan as outlined in this section.
  9. Connect the negative (-) battery cable and refill the engine coolant.


GA16DE Engine

See Figures 3P37b, 88163P38, 88163P39, 88163P40, 3P30b, 88163P41, 88163P42 and 88163P43

The front oil seal can be replaced by removing the crankshaft damper. Review Crankshaft Damper procedures earlier in this section. Some engines may prove to be difficult to remove the damper or oil seal with front cover and engine installed. It may be helpful to raise and support the car and remove the front wheels. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove the engine or front cover.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant.

  1. Remove the upper radiator hoses and coolant fan connectors.
  2. Remove the engine drive belts.
  3. Remove the power steering pulley and remove the pump with bracket.
  4. Remove the air duct from the intake manifold collector.
  5. Disconnect the vacuum hoses, wiring, and harness connectors.
  6. Remove the right front wheel and remove the inner wheel covers.
  7. Remove the engine under covers.
  8. Remove the cylinder head front mounting bracket.
  9. Remove the valve cover from the engine. Be sure to loosen in reverse order of installation.
  10. Remove the distributor cap and remove the spark plugs, if necessary.
  11. Remove the intake manifold supports.
  12. Position the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of compression stroke.
  13. Matchmark the distributor rotor and the distributor housing. Remove the distributor from the vehicle, if necessary.
  14. Remove the water pump pulley from water pump.
  15. Remove the complete thermostat housing assembly from the engine.
  16. Remove the lower timing chain tensioner.
  17. Remove the upper timing chain tensioner and slack side timing chain guide.


To install:

  1. Confirm that No. 1 piston is set at TDC on compression stroke.
  2. Install the crankshaft sprocket with the marks of the sprocket facing the front of the engine.
  3. Install the oil pump drive spacer and install the chain guide.
  4. Install the lower timing chain. Set the chain by aligning its mating mark with the one on the crankshaft sprocket. Make sure the sprocket's mating mark faces the front of the engine.

The number of links between the alignment marks are the same for the left and the right side.

  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket and the lower timing chain. Set the timing chain by aligning its mating mark with the one on the crankshaft sprocket. Make sure sprocket's mating mark faces engine front. The number of links between the alignment marks are the same for the left and right side.
  2. Using liquid gasket, install the front cover assembly.
  3. Install engine front mounting bracket and install the engine mount.
  4. Install the oil strainer, oil pan assembly, and the crankshaft pulley.
  5. Install the center crossmember.
  6. Set the idler sprocket by aligning the mating mark on the larger sprocket with the silver mating mark on the lower timing chain.
  7. If necessary, install the upper timing chain and set it by aligning the mating mark on the smaller sprocket with the silver mating marks on the upper timing chain. Make sure sprocket marks face engine front.
  8. Install the upper timing chain tensioner. Before installation of the tensioner, install a suitable pin to hold the tensioner in the relaxed position. After installing the chain tensioner, remove the pin.
  9. Install the lower timing chain tensioner. Be sure the notch of the gasket is positioned down.
  10. Apply liquid gasket to the thermostat housing and install the housing. Tighten the mounting bolts to 55-73 inch lbs. (7-8 Nm).
  11. Install the remaining components. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 55-73 inch lbs. (7-8 Nm).
  12. Using liquid gasket, install the cylinder head front cover. Tighten the mounting nuts or bolts to 33-44 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm).

If any part of the valve assembly or camshafts have been replace, the valve lash clearance will have to be checked.

  1. Tighten the valve cover bolts in sequence to 18-35 inch lbs. (2-4 Nm). Be sure to install new gaskets for the spark plug tubes.
  2. Tighten the spark plugs to 14-22 ft. lbs. (20-29 Nm). Connect the vacuum hoses, wiring and harness connectors.
  3. Install the upper radiator hose and refill the system with coolant.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable. Refill all fluid levels. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.


SR20DE Engine

The front oil seal can be replaced by removing the crankshaft damper. Review Crankshaft Damper procedures earlier in this section. Some engines may prove to be difficult to remove damper or oil with front cover and engine installed. It may be helpful to raise and support the car and remove the front wheels. In some cases it may be necessary to remove the engine or front cover.


CAUTION Fuel injection systems remain under pressure after the engine has been turned OFF. Properlyrelieve the fuel pressure, as outlined in Section 5before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire or personal injury.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant.

  1. Remove the radiator.
  2. Remove the right front wheel and engine side cover.
  3. Remove the spark plugs.
  4. Rotate the engine and position the No. 1 cylinder to TDC.
  5. Remove the air duct to the intake manifold.
  6. Remove the drive belts and the water pump pulley.
  7. Remove the alternator and the power steering pump from the engine.
  8. Label and remove the vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, and the wire harness connectors.
  9. Remove the intake manifold supports, if necessary.
  10. Unbolt and remove the oil filter bracket and the power steering pump bracket.
  11. Remove the timing chain tensioner, as needed.
  12. Remove the timing chain guide.


To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces.
  2. If removed, install the crankshaft sprocket. Position the crankshaft so that No. 1 piston is set at TDC (keyway at 12 o'clock, mating mark at 4 o'clock) fit timing chain to crankshaft sprocket so the mating mark is in line with mating mark on crankshaft sprocket. The mating marks on timing chain for the camshaft sprockets should be silver. The mating mark on the timing chain for the crankshaft sprocket should be gold.
  3. Install the timing chain to the crankshaft sprocket and install the timing chain guides. Tighten the timing chain guides to 9-14 ft. lbs. (13-19 Nm). Drape the timing chain over the left chain guide.
  4. Install the oil pump drive spacer to the crankshaft.
  5. Apply a continuous bead of liquid sealant to the front timing cover and install the cover. Torque the front cover mounting bolts to 57-66 inch lbs. (6.4-7.5 Nm).
  6. Install right front engine mount.
  7. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the mounting bolt to 105-112 ft. lbs. (142-152 Nm). Be sure the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  8. Install the oil strainer, baffle plate, and the oil pan assembly.
  9. Be sure to apply a bead of sealant to the joint of the block and front timing cover.
  10. Using new hose clamps, install the coolant hoses to the engine block.
  11. Install the timing chain guide, if removed.
  12. Install the chain tensioner. Press the cam stopper down and the press-in sleeve until the hook can be engaged on the pin. When tensioner is bolted in position the hook will release automatically.

Ensure the arrow on the outside of the tensioner faces the front of the engine.

  1. Install the oil filter bracket and the power steering pump bracket.
  2. Install the intake manifold supports.
  3. Install a continuous bead of sealant to the rocker cover and install the cover. Torque the mounting bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Tighten nuts No. 1, 10, 11, 13 and 8 (in that order) to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
    2. Tighten nuts No. 1 through 13 in numerical order to 70-86 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
