REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Procedure is as follows:----
4.0L Engine
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
All vehicles
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable..
- Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL).
- Remove the starter.
- Remove the oil pan.
- Remove the 2 bolts and position the fan shroud on the cooling fan.
- Remove the oil level indicator.
- Remove the 2 LH engine support insulator nuts.
- Remove the A/C compressor and power steering bolt and use it to install the Engine Lifting Bracket.
- Remove the 2 RH engine support insulator nuts.
- Remove the heater tube assembly front bolt and use it to install the Engine Lifting Bracket.
- Install the Engine Support Bar and the 2 Adapters for 303-290A and raise the engine 1 inch (25 mm).
- Remove the bolt and position the transmission cooler tube bracket aside.
- If equipped, remove the nut and position the A/C tube bracket aside.
4WD vehicles
NOTE
Some vehicles are equipped with a 2-piece dual converter Y-pipe (LH and RH).
- Remove the dual converter Y-pipe.
- Driveshaft removed for clarity.
- Secure the axle housing to a suitable jack.
NOTEAny time bolts, washers, spacers or nuts are loosened in the front axle housing for any reason, install new components to prevent damage.
- Remove the 3 axle housing mounting bolts and lower the front axle housing approximately 25 mm (1 in). Discard the front axle housing support bolts and nuts.
All vehicles
- Remove the bolt and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.
- Remove the 2 transmission-to-cylinder block cradle bolts.
- Note the location of the 2 Torx head bolts at the rear of the cylinder block cradle.
- Remove the 2 cylinder block cradle rear bolts.
- Remove the 20 bolts and 2 nuts along the outside of the cylinder block cradle.
- Note the location of the 2 silver-colored bolts that have washer seals. They must be installed in the same position with new washer seals.
- Remove the 8 cylinder block cradle inner bolts and the 2 washer seals. Discard the washer seals.
- Remove the cylinder block cradle and the gasket. Discard the gasket.
To install:
All vehicles
NOTE
Failure to back off the 8 set screws can result in damage to the cylinder block cradle.
- Back the 8 set screws off until they are below the cylinder block cradle boss.
WARNINGDo not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the old cylinder block cradle gasket and sealant.
NOTEGasket material as well as silicone sealant may be present in the cavities in the main bearing cap. This material must be removed completely prior to assembly. - Clean the gasket mating surfaces, making sure all the sealant is removed from the cavities on the rear main bearing cap. To clean the sealing area, use a plastic scraping tool, silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
NOTEIf not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant in the 6 places shown.
- Position a new gasket and the cylinder block cradle. Install the outer 20 bolts and 2 nuts finger-tight.
- Install the 2 cylinder block cradle rear bolts finger-tight.
- Install the 2 transmission-to-cylinder block cradle bolts. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
- Tighten the outer 20 bolts and 2 nuts as follows:
Tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).Tighten the bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm). - Tighten the 2 cylinder block cradle rear Torx® bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Tighten the 8 set screws to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
- Install the 2 silver-colored bolts and new washer seals finger-tight.
- Install the 6 remaining inner bolts finger-tight.
- Tighten the 8 inner bolts in the sequence shown in 2 stages:
- Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and install the bolt. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
4WD vehicles
WARNING
Any time bolts, washers, spacers or nuts are loosened in the front axle housing for any reason, install new components to prevent damage.
- Raise the front axle housing into place and install new bolts and nuts. Tighten to 49 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).
- Remove the jack.
- Install the dual converter Y-pipe
All vehicles
- If equipped, position the A/C tube bracket and install the nut. Tighten to 177 inch lbs. (20 Nm).
- Position the transmission fluid cooler tube and install the bolt. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
- Lower the engine and remove the engine support bar and the 2 adapters for 303-209A.
- Remove the engine lifting bracket.
- Install the coolant tube bolt and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
- Install the RH engine support insulator nuts and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Remove the engine lifting bracket and install the power steering and A/C compressor bracket bolt. Tighten to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
- Install the 2 LH engine support insulator nuts and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
- Install the oil level indicator.
- Position the fan shroud and install the 2 bolts. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Install the oil pan.
- Install the starter.
- Install the ACL outlet pipe.
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
