REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Step by Step Instructions are as follows:----
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Rear wheelBrake caliper and rotorParking brake shoes and hardwareBearing case nutsAxle shaft and bearing assembly - Separate the backing plate from the bearing case by removing the serrated bolts.
- Grind a flat spot on the wheel speed sensor rotor and retainer, then split them with a hammer and chisel.
- Remove the axle snapring.
- Press the axle bearing case, bearing and retainer off of the axle.
- Press the axle bearing from the bearing case.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Backing plateAxle housing oil sealBearing case oil seal
To install:
- Press the wheel bearing into the bearing case.
- Install the bearing case to the backing plate with the serrated bolts.
- Install or connect the following:
Bearing case oil sealAxle housing oil sealAxle shaft to backing plate and bearing assemblyBearing retainerAxle snapringWheel speed sensor rotor and retainerAxle shaft and bearing assembly to the axle housing. Tighten the nuts to 91 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).Parking brake shoes and hardwareBrake caliper and rotorRear wheel
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Rear wheelBrake drum and gasket - Using a dial indicator, check the bearing backlash and the axle shaft deviation. If the bearing backlash exceeds a maximum or 0.028 in. (0.7mm), replace it. If the axle shaft deviation exceeds the maximum of 0.004 in. (0.1mm), replace it.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
WARNINGBe careful not to damage the oil seal.
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from the rear axle housing, if equippedBrake line from the wheel cylinder, using tool 09023-00100Parking brake cable4 backing plate nutsAxle shaft assembly, by pulling it from the axle housing
O-ring from the rear axle housingInner side oil seal using tool 09308-00010 - If equipped with ABS, perform the following:
- Remove and discard the 4 serration bolt nuts; then, using a hammer, drive the bolts from the backing plate.
- Using a grinder, grind the retainer and sensor rotor surfaces; then, chisel them out.
- Remove the snapring from the axle shaft.
- Remove the axle shaft from the backing plate, as follows:
- Position tool 09521-25011 onto the backing plate with the 4 nuts.
- Using a shop press, remove the axle shaft and bearing retainer from the backing plate.
- Using tool 09308-00010, pull the oil seal from the backing plate.
- Using a shop press and tools 09223-56010 and 09950-60010, press the bearing from the backing plate.
To install:
- Install or connect the following:
Bearing into the backing plate, using a shop press and tools 09223-56010 and 09950-60010New O-ring to the rear axle housingNew oil seal into the backing plate, using a hammer and tools 09950-70010 and 09950-60010 - Install the axle shaft to the backing plate, as follows:
WARNINGBe careful not to damage the oil seal.
New outer side seal, lubricate the oil seal lip with multi-purpose greaseBacking plate and bearing retainer onto the rear axle shaftAxle shaft onto the backing plate, by pressing it using a shop press and tool 09316-60011New snapring - Install or connect the following:
WARNINGBe careful not to damage the oil seal.
New sensor rotor and new bearing retainer onto the axle shaft, using a shop press and tool 09316-60011 to a standard length of 4.77-4.85 in. (121.2-123.2mm), if equipped with ABSNew inner side oil seal, using a hammer and tools 09950-60020 and 09950-70010Axle shaft assembly. Torque the bolts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
Parking brake cableBrake line to the wheel cylinder, using tool 09023-00100. Torque the brake line to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).Rear brake assemblyABS speed sensor to the rear axle housing. Torque it to 7.1 ft. lbs. (8.0 Nm). - Using a dial indicator, check the bearing backlash and the axle shaft deviation. If the bearing backlash exceeds a maximum or 0.028 in. (0.7mm), replace it. If the axle shaft deviation exceeds the maximum of 0.004 in. (0.1mm), replace it.
- Install or connect the following:
New gasket and brake drumRear wheel. Torque the lug nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm). - Bleed the brake system.
- Check the ABS speed sensor signal.
