Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear Replacing on Toyota Land Cruiser & Sequoia?

The details here provided are similar for both Toyota Land Cruiser, Sequoia car models.


Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear
Removal & Installation Step by step procedure and diagrams are as follows:----


  1. Matchmark the intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following: 

    Negative battery cable
    Engine under covers
    Outer tie rod ends
    Engine oil filter adapter
    Intermediate steering shaft
    Power steering hoses and bracket
    Power steering gear

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering gear. Tighten the fasteners to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    Power steering hoses and bracket
    Intermediate steering shaft. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
    Engine oil filter adapter. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    Outer tie rod ends. Tighten the nuts to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
    Engine under covers
    Negative battery cable
  2. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir.
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

  1. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the engine under-covers.
  4. Disconnect the left and right tie rod ends.
  5. Remove the oil filter.
  6. Remove the oil filter adapter.
  7. Turn the steering fully to the right, matchmark and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the gear.
  8. Disconnect the pressure and return lines.
  9. Remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the gear, sliding it to the right and pulling it from the left side.
  10. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Steering gear mounting bolts: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
    Return line: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 300mm.
    Pressure line: 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm)
    Oil filter adapter: 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
    Tie rod ends: 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine under cover
    Steering wheel pad
    Steering wheel
    Left and right outer tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles
  4. Matchmark the No. 2 intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: 

    Clamp plate
    Pressure feed and return tubes from the power steering gear, using tool 09631-22020

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering gear assembly. Torque the set bolt to 123 ft. lbs. (165 Nm) and the set nut/bolt to 96 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
    Pressure feed and return tubes to the power steering gear. Torque them to 27 ft. lbs. (32 Nm), using tool 09631-22020.
    Clamp plate. Torque the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
    No. 2 intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft
    Left and right outer tie-rod ends to the steering knuckles. Torque the nuts to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
    Steering wheel. Torque the nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    Steering wheel pad
    Engine under cover
  2. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  3. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
