Removal & Installation
4.6L Engine
Specific to:
Ford Mustang 2009-2010
WARNING
Do not smoke, carry lighted tobacco or have an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
WARNING
Before working on or disconnecting any of the fuel tubes or fuel system components, relieve the fuel system pressure to prevent accidental spraying of fuel. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure, even when the engine is not running. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
All vehicles
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
- Release the fuel system pressure.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Release the 2 windshield washer hose retainers and the one hood insulation pin-type retainer.
- Position the hood insulation aside and disconnect the windshield washer hose.
NOTEIndex-mark the hood hinge location to aid in hood installation. - Remove the 4 bolts and the hood.
- Remove the cowl vent screen.
- Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) and outlet pipe.
- Remove the engine coolant crossover manifold assembly.
- Remove the degas bottle.
- Remove the 6 pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
- Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
- Disconnect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector.
- Disconnect the coolant hose from the oil filter adapter.
- Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil. Install the drain plug and tighten to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
- Detach the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Remove the nut and the ground wire from the stud bolt. Detach the pin-type retainer from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the bolt, 3 nuts and position the A/C compressor aside. Support the A/C compressor with a length of mechanic's wire.
- Remove the wiring harness retainer from the power steering stud bolt.
- Remove the 3 stud bolts and position the power steering pump aside. Support the power steering pump with a length of mechanic's wire.
- Install the Engine Lifting Bracket to the threaded hole located at the LH side of the engine block.
NOTEThe rear of the engine must be supported before removing the transmission to prevent damage to the engine or cowl.
NOTEDo not position the legs of the Engine Support Bar on the fenders. Instead, the legs should be positioned on the body structure near the suspension strut tower. Failure to follow these instructions may result in body damage. - Install the Engine Support Bar and a suitable length of chain to the engine lifting bracket installed in the previous step.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Remove the nut and position aside the transmission cooler tube bracket.
- Remove the transmission.
Vehicles with manual transmission
- Remove the clutch.
All vehicles
- Disconnect the RH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
- Disconnect the RH and LH catalyst monitor sensor.
- Remove the engine-to-transmission spacer plate.
- Disconnect the heater hoses.
- Remove the bolt and the ground strap from the cowl. Detach the pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect the generator jumper harness electrical connector.
- Disconnect the upper and lower PCM electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the 16-pin electrical connector and detach the 2 wiring retainers.
- Remove the Power Distribution Box (PDB) cover.
- Detach the PDB upper housing from the lower housing, loosen the bolt, and then disconnect the 68-pin connector from the PDB.
- Remove the nut and LH radio interference capacitor from the engine front cover stud bolt.
- Remove the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts.
- Install the Engine Lifting Bracket.
- Attach a suitable floor crane to the engine lifting bracket installed in the previous step. Remove the Engine Support Bar from the vehicle. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
To install:
- Install the Engine Lifting Bracket to the threaded hole located at the LH side of the engine block.
NOTEDo not remove the engine crane until the Engine Support Bar is installed in the next step. The rear of the engine must be supported to prevent damage to the engine or cowl panel. - Using a suitable engine crane, position the engine in the vehicle.
NOTEDo not position the legs of the Engine Support Bar on the fenders. Instead, the legs should be positioned on the body structure near the suspension strut tower. Failure to follow these instructions may result in body damage. - Install the Engine Support Bar and a suitable length of chain to the Engine Lifting Bracket installed in the previous step. Remove the engine crane.
- Remove the Engine Lifting Bracket.
- Install the RH and LH engine support insulator nuts. Tighten to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
- Install the LH radio interference capacitor and nut onto the engine front cover stud bolt. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Connect the 68-pin connector to the Power Distribution Box (PDB) and tighten the bolt. Tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Attach the PDB upper housing to the lower housing.
- Install the PDB cover.
- Connect the 16-pin electrical connector and attach the 2 wiring retainers.
- Connect the upper and lower PCM electrical connectors.
- Connect the generator jumper harness electrical connector.
- Install the ground strap and bolt to the cowl. Tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Attach the pin-type retainer.
- Connect the heater hoses.
- Install the engine-to-transmission spacer plate.
- Connect the RH and LH catalyst monitor sensor.
- Connect the RH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
Vehicles with manual transmission
- Install the clutch.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Install the transmission.
- Install the transmission cooler tube bracket and nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
All vehicles
- Remove the Engine Support Bar, Chain and the Engine Lifting Bracket from the engine.
- Position the power steering pump and install the 3 stud bolts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Install the wiring retainer on the power steering stud bolt.
- Position the A/C compressor, bolt and install the 3 nuts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Connect the A/C clutch and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connectors. Attach the wiring harness retainers.
- Install the ground wire onto the stud bolt. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Attach the pin-type retainer from the A/C compressor.
- Attach the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Connect the coolant hose to the oil filter adapter.
- Connect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector.
- Install the accessory drive belt.
- Install the radiator sight shield and the 6 pin-type retainers.
- Install the engine coolant crossover.
- Install the degas bottle.
- Install the air cleaner and outlet pipe.
- Install the cowl vent screen.
NOTEUse the hood hinge location index marks made during removal to aid in hood installation. - Install the hood and 4 bolts.
- Connect the windshield washer hose and position the hood insulation.
- Install the hood insulation pin-type retainer and attach the 2 windshield washer hose retainers.
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
- Fill and bleed the engine cooling system.
- Connect the battery ground cable.
