The procedure is similar for both ford and Lincoln car models:-----
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Details are for Ford F series Vehicles and Lincoln Mark LT model vehicles.
Removal & Installation
4.2L Engine
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the cooling fan assembly.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Using the special tool to prevent the crankshaft rotation, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
- Using the special tools, remove the crankshaft pulley.
To install:
- Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the keyway in the crankshaft damper and use the special tool to install the crankshaft damper.
- Using the special tool to prevent crankshaft rotation, install the bolt. Tighten to 160 Nm (118 ft. lbs.).
- Connect the battery ground cable.
- Install the fan blade assembly.
- Install the drive belt.
- Remove the cooling fan shroud.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.
NOTEThis bolt is torque-to-yield and cannot be reused. - Using the special tool, remove the bolt and washer and discard the bolt.
- Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft pulley.
To install:
NOTE
If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the Woodruff key slot on the crankshaft pulley.
- Using the special tool, install the crankshaft pulley.
- Using a new crankshaft pulley bolt, install the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer. Using the special tool to hold the crankshaft pulley, tighten the bolt in 4 stages:
Stage 1: Tighten the bolt to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).Stage 2: Loosen the bolt one full turn.Stage 3: Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).Stage 4: Tighten the bolt an additional 90 degrees without exceeding 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs.). - Rotate the tensioner clockwise and install the drive belt.
- Install the cooling fan shroud.
All vehicles:
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Disconnect the battery LH and RH ground cable(s).
- Remove the cooling fan stator. For additional information, refer to Cooling Fan Stator in this section.
Vehicles with dual generator:
- Remove the dual generator accessory drive belt.
- Remove the bolts and the dual generator pulley.
All vehicles:
- Remove the accessory drive belt.
- Check the crankshaft vibration damper runout.
- Remove the paint from the face of the crankshaft vibration damper at four points 90 degrees apart.
- Attach the special tool to the cylinder block. Position the special tool on one of the unpainted surfaces.
- Using a suitable tool, pry the crankshaft forward. Zero the dial indicator.
NOTEPry the crankshaft forward only to eliminate possible error caused by crankshaft end play.
- Rotate the crankshaft 90 degrees. Pry the crankshaft forward. Record the measurement. Repeat at each unpainted surface. If the runout exceeds specification, install a new crankshaft vibration damper.
CAUTIONTo avoid personal injury, support the vibration damper during mounting bolt removal. The damper can slide off the nose of the crankshaft very easily. - Remove the bolts and the crankshaft vibration damper. Discard the bolts.
To install:
All vehicles:
WARNING
To prevent engine damage, you must always install four new bolts when installing the vibration damper.
NOTE
Do not use anti-seize compounds, grease or any lubricants. Lubricants have an adverse effect on the torque results.
- Install the crankshaft vibration damper and bolts. Tighten in the sequence shown.
Step 1: Tighten to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).Step 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees. - Install the accessory drive belt.
Vehicles with dual generator:
- Install the dual generator pulley and bolts.
- Install the dual generator accessory drive belt.
All vehicles:
- Install the cooling fan stator.
- Connect the LH and RH battery ground cables.
