Oil Pan

Removal & Installation

1MZ-FE Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

Drain the engine oil.

Remove or disconnect the following:

Negative battery cable
Fender apron seal
Undercover
Front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan

Flywheel housing undercover
Bolts and nuts from the No. 2 oil pan
Oil strainer and gasket
Remove the No.1 oil pan
Baffle plate from the No. 1 oil pan

To install:

Clean all mating surfaces of the oil pans.

Install or connect the following:

Baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
Install the No. 1 oil pan. with liquid sealant. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. 10mm head bolt: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm). 12mm head bolt: 14 ft. lbs. (19.5 Nm). 14mm head bolt-27 ft. lbs. (37.2 Nm).
Flywheel housing undercover. Tighten to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
Oil strainer. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
No. 2 oil pan. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pan and engine block. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Bolts: 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
Flywheel housing undercover
Front exhaust pipe bracket to the No. 1 oil pan. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
Exhaust manifolds to the front exhaust pipe nuts: 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Front exhaust pipe to the center exhaust pipe. Bolts and nuts: 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
Bracket with the 2 bolts. Bolts: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
Support stay with the 2 bolts. Bolts: 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
Undercover
Right fender apron seal
Negative battery cable

Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.

Start the engine and check for leaks.

2az-FE Engine

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

Drain the engine oil.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove engine under cover and any components for access.

Remove the oil pan mounting bolts and nuts.

Insert a suitable blade between the crankcase and oil pan to cut any sealer.

Remove the pan.

To install:

Clean the pan and contact surface of any old gasket material.

Apply a continuous bead of sealant, 0.157 in. (3 mm) in diameter to the contact surface of the oil pan.

Install the oil pan and tighten the mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

Install the engine undercover.

Connect the negative battery cable.

Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.

Start the engine and check for leaks.

2gr-FE Engine

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

Drain the engine oil.

Remove the engine/transaxle assembly.

Secure the engine in a suitable stand.

Remove or disconnect the following:
NOTE
Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan. Wrap any pry tool with protective tape.

Oil pipes
Oil filter cartridge
Lower oil pan
Oil strainer
Upper oil pan

To install:

Apply a continuous bead of sealant 0.118-0.156 in. (3-4 mm) in diameter to the mating surface of the upper oil pan.

Install the upper oil pan and tighten the bolts and nuts as follows:
1. Bolts A: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
2. All others: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

Install the oil strainer. Tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

Clean mating surface of the lower oil pan. Apply a continuous bead of sealant 0.118-0.156 in. (3-4 mm) in diameter to the mating surface of the lower oil pan.

Install the lower oil pan and tighten the mounting bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.

3MZ-FE Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

Drain the engine oil.

Remove or disconnect the following:

Negative battery cable
RF wheel
Engine under covers
RH front fender apron seal
A/C compressor, alternator and PS drive belts
Engine stabilizer rod
Engine mounting stay No2.
Alternator bracket
Crankshaft pulley
Timing belt
Crankshaft timing pulley
Exhaust pipe and support brackets
Oil gauge guide
Alternator belt adjusting bar
A/C compressor/clutch assembly
A/C compressor mounting bracket

Separate FR engine mounting insulator
NOTE
Do NOT remove the FR engine mounting at this time
1. Remove bolt and disconnect the power steering return hose
2. Remove the 4 nuts
3. Place a wooden block underneath the engine
4. Jack up the engine and remove the engine mounting insulator
  WARNING
  Be careful not to damage the oil pan

Remove or disconnect the following:
WARNING
Be careful not to damage the oil pan flange area or the contact surface of the engine block.

RH engine mounting bracket
10 bolts and 2 nuts, gently pry off the oil pan sub assembly No.2.

To install:

Install the oil pan sub-assembly No. 1.

Remove any old oil sealant from contact surface. Clean the surface thoroughly.

Apply a continuous bead of sealant 0.12 to 0.16 in ( 3 to 4 mm) around the block surface, making certain to surround the bolt holes.

Install the oil pan within 3 minutes after applying the sealant
NOTE
Do NOT expose sealant to engine oil within 2 hours after installing

Install the oil pan using the 17 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten uniformly in several steps as follows:
1. 10 mm head 71 in. lbs (8.0 Nm).
2. 12 mm head 14 ft. lbs.(20 Nm).
3. 14 mm head 27 ft. lbs (37 Nm).

Install or connect the following:

Engine oil level sensor
Oil strainer assembly
Oil pan sub assembly No. 2

Remove any old oil sealant from contact surface. Clean the surface thoroughly.

Apply a continuous bead of sealant 0.16 to 0.20 in. ( 3 to 4 mm) around the block surface, making certain to surround the bolt holes.

Install the oil pan within 3 minutes after applying the sealant.
NOTE
Do NOT expose sealant to engine oil within 2 hours after installing

Install the oil pan using the 10 bolts and 2 nuts. Torque to 71 inch lbs. (8.0 Nm).

Install or connect the following:

RH engine mounting bracket; torque bolts -A- & -B- to 40 ft. lbs (54 Nm) and bolt -C- to 32 ft. lbs (43 Nm)

A/C compressor mounting bracket; torque to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm)
A/C compressor/clutch assembly; torque to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
Alternator belt adjusting bar; torque bolt to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm) and nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
Oil level gauge guide

Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.

Start the engine and check for leaks.

5S-FE Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

Drain the engine oil.

Remove or disconnect the following:

Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
Undercovers
Front exhaust pipe
Engine mounting center member
On Celica, the 3-way Catalytic Converter (TWC)
Rear end stiffener plate
Oil dipstick
Oil pan bolts and nuts. Cut off the applied sealer.

NOTE

Do not use the cutting tool for the oil pump body side and rear oil seal retainer.

To install:

Remove any old sealant from the oil pan flange and thoroughly clean both sealing surfaces.

Install or connect the following:

Oil pan. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes. Bolts and nuts: 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm)
Oil dipstick
Rear end stiffener plate
On Celica, the TWC.
Engine mounting center member
Front exhaust pipe
Negative battery cable
Undercovers

Fill the engine with clean oil.

Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

Drain the engine oil.

Remove or disconnect the following:
NOTE
Do not use the cutting tool for the oil pump body side and rear oil seal retainer.

Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
