How to Check Automatic Transmission Fluid Level?

Open the hood and locate the transmission fluid level dipstick. This method for checking transmission fluid it not correct for newer Explorer. There is no dipstick just a plug found in the bottom of the transmission oil pan. If oil runs out of the plug, it is considered to be full.

Check the level of transmission fluid while the vehicle is running to see if it is below the manufacturer's specifications.

Insert a transmission funnel into the dipstick tube and fill the transmission with the manufacturer's recommended fluid to the proper level.

Insert the dipstick and recheck the fluid level while the engine is running. Add additional fluid if necessary.
