Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear Removal on Toyota Tundra?

The Toyota Tundra Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear Replacing Procedure is as follows :---

The complete details with possible diagrams to replace power rack and pinion steering gear is as follows:----


  1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine under cover
    Steering wheel pad
    Steering wheel
    Left and right outer tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles
  3. Matchmark the No. 2 intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Clamp plate
    Pressure feed and return tubes from the power steering gear, using tool 09631-22020
    Power steering gear assembly

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering gear assembly. Torque the set bolt to 123 ft. lbs. (165 Nm) and the set nut/bolt to 96 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
    Pressure feed and return tubes to the power steering gear. Torque them to 27 ft. lbs. (32 Nm), using tool 09631-22020.
    Clamp plate. Torque the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
    No. 2 intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft
    Left and right outer tie-rod ends to the steering knuckles. Torque the nuts to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
    Steering wheel. Torque the nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    Steering wheel pad
    Engine under cover
  2. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  3. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.

NOTE
Remove the steering wheel assembly before removing the steering gear, because there is a possibility of breaking the spiral cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  3. Disarm the SRS system.
  4. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  5. Remove the steering wheel lower cover number two and three. Carefully pull the steering wheel pad from its mounting and disconnect the airbag connectors and horn terminal.
    NOTE
    If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch in the ON or ACC position, DTC codes will be set.
  6. Remove the steering wheel pad. When storing the pad assembly, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward. Never disassemble the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    When removing the pad, take care not to pull on the airbag wire harness.
  7. Remove the steering wheel locknut. Using a steering wheel removal tool, remove the steering wheel from the vehicle. Disconnect the connector.
  8. Remove the left and right outer tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  9. Matchmark the No. 2 intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.
  10. Remove or disconnect the following: 

    Clamp plate
    Pressure feed and return tubes from the power steering gear, using tool 09631-22020
    Power steering gear assembly 

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering gear assembly. Torque the set bolt to 123 ft. lbs. (165 Nm) and the set nut/bolt to 96 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
    Pressure feed and return tubes to the power steering gear, using tool 09631-22020.
    Clamp plate. Torque the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
    No. 2 intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft
    Left and right outer tie-rod ends to the steering knuckles. Torque the nuts to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
  2. To center the spiral cable, check that the front tires are in the straight ahead position. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it feels firm. Rotate the cable clockwise about 2 ½ turns to align the marks. 
    NOTE
    The cable will rotate about 2 ½ turns to both the right and left from the center.

  3. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  4. Tighten the steering wheel retaining locknut to 26 ft. lbs. on 2001-2004 vehicles and to 37 ft. lbs. on 2005-2006 vehicles.
  5. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  6. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment, as necessary.
